The general Media is evil and no good will come of it. Even if you present yourself well as an upstanding citizen and responsible racer, they will turn you into an ignorant street racing riceboy in the editing room.

Find out who these people are before you agree to anything and be careful about bringing Club DSM into anything. I am 90% sure I don't want to be affiliated with this. I've seen too many well-intentioned people get screwed by the general Media. Ask the Tampa guys about that.

If they are representatives of some enthusiast publication, that might be different. But, I'd only consider working with a Primedia company or possibly C&D and ONLY if I had a written agreement that I got some sort of approval before print.

Just be careful.

Jack does make a really good point on this Keith. What is this group of people actually planning to do with this?

Calm down, Jack-o! SHEESH!

This is going to be legit, and it won't depict us as ignorant little punkass riceboys. Quite the contrary. The show will concentrated on the people behind the cars, as well as the subculture around the entire sport compact scene. It won't be some piddley news show that makes us look like idiots. It will definitely be geared toward enthusiast.

Come by on Friday and find out what it's going to be about.

Famous last words.

If I get the Succubus running by then, I will come out to be the Voice of Skepticism. ;)

Some questions to find out:
Who? What organization is this? Why? What is the goal of the presentation? What? What form of media is this to be presented in (TV, movie, print)? When? When will this be presented? Where? Where will this be presented (locally, nationally, regionally somewhere else, etc.)?

If I can make it up there, I'll ask on Friday.

Hey John,

I am part a new film production company that we are setting up. Currently, we are producing 5 pilot programs (turn-key product), for major TV networks. Once we are pick-up by a network, then regular production will begin. This show will be televised nationally.

I am the creator of this show. Street Tek is a show about auto tunings and the subculture (ie. show, race) of this sport. The show format is about the people behind the scene and the cars they have created. Plus Q & A with Professional mechanics.

Any ideas or advises would be greatly appreaciated.

Thank you for all your assistance.

I don't know exactly what these people want to really do this story about, but I would be REAL carefull if they want ANY information about illegal racing of any sort. A friend of mine told me almost exactly what you said and did a story even though most his friends including myself disagreed with it. He said these people are cool, they even went to dinner with him and some of his friends and talked shit. They sent a young guy out with a camera one saturday night to get footage cause he fit right in they say and was cool. Well it didn't turn out the way he expected when they aired the story. People ARE AGAINST STREET RACING. The media is geared towards OLD people because they wine and have nothing better to do than try to make things the way they want them.

Just a warning for you

Sounds like the same scenario to me, I can't imagine another expose'e on the street scene. Seems like they try to get in good with one member, get the inside scope, gain some trust and then make you look like garbage to joe public groccery getter hp is for rain forrest hater type folks.

Mainstream magazines don't partake/publish in the kind of activities most of us get involved in, no good comes from feeding the media, not even a bone, I'd say proceed at your own risk.

So Tampa's had it's showcase in the media now, somewhere down around the Miami area had theirs recently, some other small areas here and there, makes you wonder whats next.

Jeez guys, it was just a little present for Scott's birthday :) This lady is actually a friend of John's - so I don't think she'll be to harsh. Of coarse you should always keep your whits about you. Just don't mention or respond to the words, "street racing".

A few things:

1) I'm still planning on coming and hearing them out. I am not saying this lady is evil, because I don't know her.

2) If someone with scars on their hand tells you not to touch the stove, do you still feel the need to grab a handful of glowing iron?

3) If they film people as a group, you bear the reflection of the worst person in that group. You know, the whole "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link" adage? If we show up and want to represent something like "Go Fast with Class" but some assmasters driving automatic Sentra XE's with "a hundred shot" are there putting on a display of their assmastery... Well, we will be associated with those people unless they put us in charge of editing.

A) This is set to be a television series.

B) I highly doubt Ms. Lowe is what I would call (in my admittedly elitist fashion) a motorsport enthusiast. This makes me think of those guys at the car shows that were on SpeedVision who didn't know the first thing about cars and constantly said things like "That's hella tight, yo."

C) The name is "Street Tek." This makes me think of "Xtrem Rice Roketz."

D) If she really wants to make it a legitimate show focusing on the people and their cars, it will not be picked up. Hollywood types do not want reality. They want 10-second Eclipse RS's with 2 big bottles of naws, Chevelles touching their bumpers on the pavement, guys being forcefed motor oil, and explosions.

E) Look at the target market for "Fast and the Furious" (the only successful comparison) and you'll find that the demographic is probably the 12-24 year old male. What TV shows match that demographic? What TV shows work while excluding the majority of middle aged and older viewers, and most females? Shit gang, look at the number of cars on the road. What percentage of those vehicles constitutes a "modified car?" What channel would touch this thing with a 10-foot boom mike if it was an accurate depiction?

5) 1-4 above lead me to believe that this is either a doomed project or one that is set to be sensationalized. Either way, I will say it again:

Just be careful.

PS - Someone get me a job so my posts will be shorter. ;)

If the "kids" get stupid, I'm outta there.. :frust:

I agree we need to be careful.

The last thing we need is more cars, anywhere in this country being shown on T.V. as homemade race cars. This kind of exposure will only bring more police bullshit upon people who modify their cars.

The bigger the "import scene" gets the more closely the authorities pay attention to it. Pretty soon they will be jacking our cars up to see if we have cats. (a 20,ooo+ dollar fine by the way).

Oh and don't forget about all the new rice people a show would inspire.:(

I think it would be cool to get some national coverage. I have faith that the orlando DSM guys will be well behaved and we wont embarass ourselves. But most of all I would like to have my car get on TV.:D

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind people that we do not necessarily represent "Club DSM" the national entity. I would also encourage people to use discretion in mentioning where they hang out and what they do.

I.E. "A group of us usually find a lot and park together. You know, just stand around and catch up - who's doing what project, how the family has been; socializing mostly. Pizza is usually involved in one way or another. Oh, and eyerolling. Yeah, you know, at all the people who see a group of cars gathered with their hoods up and somehow feel the need to squeal tires. We roll our eyes at them."

Not "Yep, Club DSM Orlando meets up at the Super Wal-Mart on E. Colonial every Friday night. We talk for a while then head out looking for some action - cruising, stoplight drags, parties, whatever."

My impressions after talking to Thuy:

1) I don't think Club DSM is right for her project, nor is her project right for Club DSM.

2) The reality of responsible club members will make poor TV. So, to get picked up, network people will want the jackasses who get chased out of hangouts. They will want illegal street racing, not legitimate racing.

3) The target demographic will be the teen ricers.

4) There will be no informed technical advisor. The crap like footwells dropping out and Eclipses with 7 gears is likely to happen again.

5) If it gets picked up, it will propogate negative stereotypes about the many subcultures by grouping them together as one.

==============================================

Finally, remember that I believe "Club DSM" is an intellectual property of Todd Day with (at least implied) copyrights. None of us should use that term on television without his permission, in my opinion.
