Saturn 160AMP alternator installed with GREAT RESULTS!

After battling voltage drop issues for a couple of months, ive decided to just chalk up the money and buy a saturn alternator and make the switch. I now have two GM parts on my car, my MAF and now the alternator To make a long story short, me and rob (1tuffdsm) decided to install the 160amp saturn alternator in place of the 70a mitsubishi alt. Reasons for changing was with all power accessories on (headlights,BOTH fuel pumps, BOTH FANS) under boost I was seeing voltage dips as low as 12.4V under boost, this to me was totally unacceptable. Also at idle with the mitsu alternator, with all power accessories on, id see a MAX of 13.2V driving around town, push in the clutch and idle at the stoplight and id be looking at 12.8V once shes hot and warmed up, again totally unacceptable. I ordered the saturn alternator from motorcityreman, opted for the self-exciting regulator (which if your reading this and contemplating doing this mod, ITS WORTH THE EXTRA 15 BUCKS AND ALSO ITS WEIGHT AND GOLD). You dont have too hack your existing wiring harness, or play with stupid PITA pigtails, just run a 2guage cable from the alternator to the battery and your done!! Lets talk about results, after starting the car I immediatly turn on all power accessories and voltage read 14.1V, I was impressed thus far, but thought once it reaches operating temp it should go lower right? Wrong, car warms up to 185degrees, all power accessories on voltage reads 14.0V!!!! I thought fcuking amazing this mod is worth the 165 bucks shipped I paid for the alternator including the lifetime warantee. I cannot say enough about this modification, car idles smooth as glass, responds to throttle changes so much quicker then it previously did and just plain outright "feels" stronger.

FWIW, the 160a puts 80a at 800rpm idle, 160a full load at 1200rpms. Im using this kit in conjunction with jayracing.com alternator relocation kit.

    Joe heres the link: http://motorcityreman.com/high-amp-a...-mount-gm.html

Its the CS130 model, Id recommend calling them up directly and speaking to Sam, he knows his sh!t about alternators. Also when talking alternator output, most compainies rate there full output at 2200rpms, MCR is 1200rpms.... a full 1000rpms sooner, we get the power we need AT IDLE! And even more on tap only 400rpms more away. I idle the car at 1100-1200 rpms reguardless so im getting full output 247! Couldnt ask for a better alternator then I recieved from MCR.

Did you get the Jayracing GM kit or did you make you Mitsu kit work?
I have about 63 GM alternators in my second box at work (cash for Clunkers)

JR saturn kit, all thats different between the two kits is the rod length. You can probley cut the mitsu rod and retap both sides and do that, but I called up jay and he sold me the other rod I needed for 20 bucks shipped.

You can install a saturn alternator on a 1g/2g without the relocation kit.

    pic taken from that thread:

it requires a little grinding without the relocation kit.

OK this is starting to look good to me Just a little eerie about all the grinding...I was thinking about sending my original out to be rebuilt with extra brushes to bump up the voltage

Ok... so I have like 30+ GM alternators... will a one wire work? I assume it will throw a code because on no feedback? How many wires are on the connector of the Saturn Alternator Steve?

The connector is covered up in some kind of black-goo, I cannot tell with it covered in the goo. I do have some datalogs of tonight, driving around town on the highway im seeing 14.2V at 2500rpms all accessories on. On low boost (24psi) im seeing 13.72V, again all power accessories on , under load. I bumped up the fuel pressure to 43psi on the 1450s, IDCs at 24psi is 60%. Car literally drives and feels COMPLETELY DIFFERENT with this alternator, nomore stalling at stoplights is a big plus. The bosch 044 has a noticeablewhine in cabin now something that wasnt prior to the alternator modification.

Frank how many amps is the alternator you have at your job? General rule of thumb is alternator amperage at idle is half its output. If you have a stock saturn alt there 96a, at idle it might put out 48amps which is pretty good, way better then any stock mitsu 65a/70a. Throw it in and never look back, I should of done this mod years ago.

Well I spoke with Sam about the 200amp model and he informed me, to use the 160amp for my perticular setup. Im sure I could have used the 200amp but he advised going that route, you must maintain a good battery in the car (optima red or yellow) he recommended. Im not one to spend 150+ bucks on a battery... For cars like mine I told Sam all I needed was to hold voltage at idle and under boost..he told me use a stock'er battery and the 160amp should do wonders and he is right 100%.

Going to try and bring this back from the dead. The alternator died already on my Galant. The heat up front definitely kills them.

So what exactly is the difference between the universal CS130 1 wire alternator linked up top and the Saturn specific CS130 alternator having the regulator installed?

Does it have something to do with the connector?
I would submit, Your Honor, that if someone is doing something demonstrably asinine, and I ask them to stop it, please, and they say, "Make us," they've entered a binding oral contract whereby I am permitted, even obligated, to try to make them.

Nope, both of these alternators are single wire, self-exciting. This means they only need the battery + connected and that's it. I still never determined the actual difference, but two others clarified that they purchased the Saturn specific CS130 so that's what I purchased. I'm still waiting for delivery so I can install and get back to driving the Galant.

I'm now waiting on my replacement to be delivered tomorrow. The first one came damaged (box most likely dropped by UPS). The alternator would barely spin half a revolution before binding up internally.

So I got the alternator installed pretty easily with a little bit of grinding. It's working like a champ! The self ignitor works perfectly and at idle provides a steady 14.3v. At idle, with headlights, foglights, taillights, double cooling fans, intercooler water pump and fan all on I still have 13.5v!
